Mystic Flag Committee Meetings

Annual Meeting Minutes
June 14, 2018

The meeting was called to order by President Eric Garofano. Eric welcomed special guests First Selectman Rob Simmons and Kathy Cook.

Father Kevin Reilly, Pastor of St. Patrick Church in Mystic offered the Invocation.

Minutes from the last Annual Meeting held on June 14, 2017 were distributed as part of the day's agenda and have been posted on the Committee's web site as well. There being no corrections, the minutes were accepted as presented.

Treasurer Adam Strelczuk distributed the Annual Treasurer's Report for the period June 1, 2017 to May 31, 2018 which are included as part of these minutes. The report was approved as presented.

Eric recognized Boy Scout Troop #76, commended them for their ongoing efforts since the mid-1970's placing the 110 street flags as well as raising the ceremonial flag and presented them with a check for $600. Scout Master Jonathan Scalise reported a successful year for the Troop with 8 scouts completing a 76 mile hike at Camp Filmore, numerous camping trips and two members achieving Eagle Scout.

Eric reported that 576 membership letters were sent out and commended Rob Simmons for introducing the idea of creating an Endowment Fund which has been established, primarily for the future replacement of the flag pole. Rob commented on the opportunity for anyone to add a codicil to their will, as he has, providing money for the Fund upon their death.

Rob also commented that he is the Flag Disposal Officer for the American Legion and sometimes flags are delivered to him that are still serviceable and merely need mending along the outer frayed edge. Sue Piver mends these flags and they are resold with profits going to the Josh Piver Memorial Fund.

Flag Captain Richard Dussault reported that the anchor stock had rotted out and that Russell Holley has fabricated a temporary support while Mystic Seaport fabricates a wood replacement. He also reported that an inspection of the epoxy at the pole base and the base itself had been conducted and both appear to be in good order.

Eric thanked S&P Oyster House for hosting this year's meeting once again and Mark Densmore of Densmore Oil for their work over the years in keeping the membership records.

Eric presented the list of nominations for officers for the 2018-19 year which was approved as follows:

Eric Garofano thanked those in attendance.

Benediction was offered by Father Reilly.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 AM

Respectfully submitted,
George R. Sylvestre
