History of Mystic's Liberty Pole

pre-2012 flagpoleMystic’s first Liberty Pole was erected in 1862, when the Civil War was raging, on the Groton side of the Mystic River. It was moved to the Stonington side of the river in 1876, but it was destroyed by a fire in 1885. Shortly thereafter, a new pole was erected at our present site, at the corner of what is now Route 1 and Holmes Street.

You can learn a great deal more about the interesting history of our Liberty Pole and Liberty Pole Square by reading our booklet, Mystic’s Liberty Pole: 1862-2012. All proceeds from booklet sales go to the maintenance of the Liberty Pole, Liberty Pole Square, and sidewalk flags.
